LAN Speed Test by Totusoft is a lightweight, portable utility designed to quickly measure your local area network (LAN) speeds. Unlike traditional internet speed tests that check your connection to an outside provider, this tool benchmarks the data transfer rate between physical devices inside your home or office—such as from a PC to a Network Attached Storage (NAS) unit, server, or another computer. 🛠️ How LAN Speed Test Works

The software evaluates your network by creating a dummy file directly in your computer’s RAM, uploading it to a shared folder or target destination on your network, clearing the file cache to prevent skewed data, downloading it back, and calculating the throughput speed.

There are two primary methods to quickly benchmark your local network using this utility: Method 1: The Quick Folder-Sharing Method (Simplest)

This is the easiest route and requires zero software installation on the receiving machine. You only need read and write permissions to a folder on another network device.

Download the App: Grab the standalone executable from the official Totusoft Download Page on your main computer.

Locate a Shared Folder: Ensure you have a target folder mapped or accessible via your network neighborhood on another machine (e.g., \YourNAS\SharedFolder or \PC2\TestFolder).

Configure the Destination: Open the app and click the ellipsis () next to Folder or IP to select your target network path.

Set File Size: Choose a packet size. A default of 100 MB or 200 MB works perfectly for a rapid baseline benchmark.

Start Test: Click Start Test. The software will write the file, read it back, automatically wipe it from the destination, and print your real-time Writing (Upload) and Reading (Download) speeds. Method 2: The Server Method (Most Accurate)

If you rely solely on folder sharing, the performance of the target hard drive can bottleneck your results, misrepresenting your true network capability. Pairing the tool with the LAN Speed Test Server eliminates storage drive limitations by testing RAM-to-RAM across devices.

Deploy the Server: Download and run the lightweight LAN Speed Test Server application on your secondary network computer.

Note the IP: Open the server app and note the local IP address and port number displayed.

Configure the Client: On your primary testing computer, open the main LAN Speed Test tool and toggle the target destination to LST Server instead of a folder path.

Link and Launch: Input the target server’s IP address and click Start Test. 📊 Reading Your Benchmark Results

The software will yield your network performance in both Mbps (Megabits per second) and MBps (Megabytes per second). You can cross-reference your results against these common theoretical hardware caps: totusoft.com LAN Speed Test – Totusoft
