DWGgateway is a free plug-in that lets you open and save different versions of AutoCAD files, but it requires you to already have a copy of AutoCAD installed. It was created by SolidWorks to help people working with different versions of the software collaborate without needing to upgrade their expensive AutoCAD licenses.
However, because DWGgateway is an older tool that works inside AutoCAD, it cannot help you if you want to open and edit files completely for free without owning AutoCAD at all. 🛠️ How DWGgateway Works (If you have AutoCAD)
If you already have an older version of AutoCAD on your computer, DWGgateway acts as a bridge.
Open newer files: You can open a .dwg file created in a brand-new version of AutoCAD, even if your software is several years old.
Save as older formats: You can save your work back into an older version format so that clients or coworkers with old software can open it.
No leaving the app: The tool places menu options right inside your existing AutoCAD window, so you do not need to use an external file converter. 🆓 Truly Free Ways to Open and Edit AutoCAD Files
If you do not have AutoCAD and want a completely free way to view or edit .dwg files, DWGgateway will not work for you. Instead, you should use one of these modern, free alternatives: 1. Autodesk web app (Best for light editing)
Autodesk, the official maker of AutoCAD, offers AutoCAD Web.
You can open, review, and do basic editing on drawings directly in your web browser. It does not require a bulky software download. 2. DWG TrueView (Best for viewing and converting)
If you just need to look at drawings and print them, Autodesk offers DWG TrueView for free. It lets you accurately view and measure 2D and 3D files.
It includes a built-in format converter to convert newer files to older versions, doing exactly what DWGgateway used to do. 3. FreeCAD or QCAD (Best for full free editing) Download Autodesk Viewers | Free Online Viewers
